Hardwood Acclimation

The question arises, what is the proper way to acclimate hardwood flooring. Please remember, acclimation is the process of adjusting (conditioning) the moisture content of wood flooring to the environment in which it is expected to perform. When wood is neither gaining nor losing moisture, equilibrium moisture content (EMC) has been reached. Hardwood flooring is a hydroscopic material which will change in dimension as a result of changes in humidity in the surrounding environment. Improper acclimation can result in the shrinking of individual boards leaving gaps between the boards, or the boards can expand leading to cupping.

Generally, the wood subflooring materials must not exceed 13% moisture content. Using a reliable wood moisture meter, measure moisture content of both subfloor and the hardwood flooring to determine proper moisture content. The difference between the moisture content of the wood flooring and the hardwood flooring must not exceed 4% for strip and 2 – 3% for plank flooring.

  • Permanent HVAC should be on and operational a minimum of 5 days and maintained between 65 – 75 degrees and a relative humidity of 35%- 55% prior to delivery, during, and after installation of the flooring.
  • If HVAC is not possible at time of installation the environmental conditions must be at or near normal living conditions between 60 – 80 degrees and at the average yearly relative humidity for the area.

Anderson Hardwood

Acclimate the product for a minimum of 72 hours or as long as needed in order to meet the proper installation requirements. Opening of the cartons will help to better acclimate material. Material is acclimated once it has reached moisture equilibrium consistent with the temperature and relative humidity of the job site and normal living conditions. Do not store materials directly on concrete ,elevate material at least 4″ above concrete. Do not deliver material in inclement weather. Always store material in a dry place.

Armstrong/Bruce Hardwood

Handle and unload with care. Store in a dry place being sure to provide at least a four-inch air space under cartons which are stored upon “on-grade” concrete floors. Flooring should not be delivered until the building has been enclosed with windows, doors are in place and cement work, plastering and all other “wet” work is completed and dry.

Chesapeake Hardwood

Hardwood flooring should be handled and unloaded with care and stored within the environmentally controlled site. Leave hardwood flooring in closed cartons in the stabilized room to acclimate for a period of at least 48 hours. Cartons should be spaced out, not stacked or stored on pallets. Flooring stored upon “on-grade” concrete floors should be elevated at least four inches to allow air circulation under cartons.

DuChateau

DuChateau recommends an acclimation period of 3 days for all our engineered hardwood flooring products.

Indusparquet

Handle and unload hardwood flooring with care and store within the environmentally controlled site in which it is expected to perform. Flooring stored upon “on-grade” concrete floors should be elevated at least four inches to allow air circulation under cartons. Hardwood flooring must acclimate for as long as necessary to meet minimum installation requirements for moisture content. Using the equilibrium moisture content chart below, determine the proper moisture content for the installation. Always use a moisture meter to determine where the flooring and present job-site conditions are in relation to the projected final equilibrium point taking into account seasonal changes.

LM Flooring

Leave hardwood flooring in closed cartons during acclimation period. Typical applications require at least a 48-hour acclimation period.

Mirage

Keep sealed boxes of wood in room where flooring is to be installed for at least 24 hours before installation.

Timbercreek

Hardwood flooring should be unloaded and handled with care and stored within the environmentally controlled site. Flooring stored upon “on-grade” concrete floors should be elevated at least four inches to allow air circulation under cartons. Cartons should be spaced out, not stacked or stored on pallets. Leave hardwood flooring in closed cartons during acclimation period. Typical applications require at least a 48-hour acclimation period.

Triangulo

Store on the job site For 72 hours at “normal living conditions.” Leave boards in sealed cartons until installation

Wellmade

Acclimate the flooring for at least 72 hours (preferably 3-4 days) prior to installation The floating Clic Solid Strand Woven should be acclimated for 7—10 days. In addition, the heating or cooling system should be operating and controlled at 50° – 70° for at least 72 hours before, during and maintained after. Remove plastic wrapping and open ends of boxes and stack so there is good air circulation around the cartons.
