An installation note on the new 8″ x 8″ Armstrong Alterna Tiles.
Many thanks to Jane Jane Detwiler of Gary’s Carpet Depot and Flooring for inquiring about the installation of the new 8″ x 8″ Alterna Tiles. The new 8″ x 8″ Alterna Tiles are designed to be installed with the 16″ x 16″ Alterna Tiles or by themselves. The 8″ x 8″ Alterna Tiles are slightly less than 8″ x 8″ and are to be installed with a 1/8″ grout spacing when used with the 16″ x 16″ Alterna Tiles.
When installed by themselves, the 8″ x 8″ Alterna Tiles may be butted together or spaced and grouted.
Question from Justin Baldwin of Avalon Carpet and Tile, “Exactly how does one install Alterna on a wall?”
Justin, no longer just for floors, Alterna tiles can be used on the wall as a decorative backsplash, accent wall or other focal point. For either a floor or wall installation, Armstrong recommends using Arm-strong S-288 Premium Adhesive. S-288 Adhesive installs over concrete, wood, dry wall (painted or unpainted), ceramic and Formica. Do Not Install Over: Debris, grease, loose paint, cracked or broken ceramic or loose Formica. Spread the Armstrong S-288 adhesive with a fine-notch trowel (1/32″ deep, 1/16″ wide, 5/64″ apart, U-notch) and allow the adhesive to become dry to the touch, with no transfer to your finger.
The Powernail 2000
The first floor runner pneumatic cleat nailer in the industry. The Powernail 2000 is ideal for use with several locking wood products offered by Armstrong. The ability to make optimal adjustments allows this cleat nailer to successfully fasten locking products. This can be achieved without damage to the groove while still allowing the product to lock properly. Several locking Armstrong products such as Performance Plus and Turlington Lock&Fold can instead be fastened in the groove. This tool is a real plus for installing these locking products. Most Armstrong engineered products can be installed with this cleat nailer. Armstrong 3/8˝ and 1/2˝ engineered products such as
Century Farm, Beckford, Metro Classics, Heritage Classics, American Scrape and Artesian Classics can be fastened with this nailer using the 1˝ and 1-1/4˝ cleats, respectively.
The Powernail 2000 is also great for installing Solid Strand Woven Bamboo hardwood along with other thinner gauge solid hardwoods 1/2″ to 5/16″ thick and most other engineered hardwoods 9/16″ to 5/16″ thick.
Three factors in drying of new concrete
1) Dry heat along with low Relative Humidity.
2) Air movement across the concrete.
3) Dehumidification equipment.
The heat and low Relative Humidity will allow the moisture in the concrete to move more rapidly from an area of high Relative Humidity (the concrete) to an area of low Relative Humidity (the air). The air movement helps the moisture move out of the capillaries, once it has moved to the surface of the slab, and into the air. The dehumidifier then captures this increased moisture from the air, in order to keep the ambient Relative Humidity low for the cycle to continue. If the Relative Humidity is high in the air as well as the concrete, the air will not be able to take on the additional moisture from the concrete.
Delmhorst TechScan Pinless Meter
Delmhorst has just introduced the TechScan Pinless Moisture Meter. The ‘Made in the U.S.A.’ TechScan is a versatile, non-destructive, non-invasive scanner that can quickly cover large areas, get to hard to reach places, and compare moisture hot spots to baseline readings in walls, floors and faming made of wood, drywall, concrete.
- Reads the moisture content of hardwood flooring from 5% – 30%.
- User Adjustable Alarm – Technicians often take readings in places where it is difficult to see meter readings. The Techscan is the only pinless moisture meter capable of alerting the technician when a predetermined dry standard has been reached.
- Smooth Rugged Sensor Plate – The Techscan’s sensor plate is smooth and won’t damage the material being tested, and unlike the competition, the sensor will not tear or snag.
- Calibrated To Minimize False High Readings – Delmhorst took great care to calibrate the Techscan meter so that it does not produce false high readings.
- Rugged one piece sensor measure moisture up to 3/4˝ deep without damaging the flooring
Heat Welding Nozzle
The most versatile heat welding nozzle available I have come across is from Winkelman Sales. The WDD722 is a 5mm Round Speed Nozzle can be used with Round Vinyl, Linoleum, and Rubber Weld Rod. Can also be used for flat lay welding and cove welding and also has the narrow preheat required for urethane coated floors. Winkelman Sales, 716-824-1403. Pay with Credit Card save 5%.
