JK Carpets was founded by John and Pam Kulick in 1985, in Locust Grove, VA. John Kulick started in the flooring industry as a young teenager, learning the trade through his father, a flooring installer. John continued as a flooring installer, working as a superintendent for a large flooring company in Northern Virginia, before deciding to start his own business in the Fredericksburg area. His wife, Pam, had an accounting background and naturally took responsibility of the bookkeeping and ordering, while John provided estimates, scheduled installations, and completed jobs along with other JK Carpets installers.
They rented a commercial space outside of Lake of the Woods, starting out with a small showroom and office, with a separate rented storage space as their warehouse. As their business grew, so did their need for space, and in 1996, JK Carpets built their current building, on Germanna Highway, that houses a showroom, offices, and an attached 5,000 square foot warehouse.
At the time, JK Carpets was open to both retail clients as well as builders for sales and installation. Once the number of builder contracts grew, they wanted to ensure they could manage the increased work while keeping customer satisfaction a top priority. They made the decision in 2001, to close their retail showroom to the public, and were only open by appointment for builder selections. After 7 years of serving just builders and their clients, the economy declined, and the number of new home plans decreased. In 2008, JK Carpets reopened the showroom to retail, commercial, and builder clientele.
JK Carpets started as a family business and to this day is still ran as a family business. John and Pam are actively involved in the business as well as their daughter Kelley, who is the marketing manager and an interior decorator. Their goal is to ensure that everyone who walks through the door feels like family, and they treat them that way. The majority of their business is repeat customers and customer referrals, and they take pride in that.
Through the years they’ve formed quality long term relationships with manufacturers and flooring providers, including J.J Haines, which awarded them Retailer of the Year in 2014.
The Kulicks have lived and worked in the Fredericksburg area for over 30 years and are actively involved in the community. Pam is a member of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, as well as several networking organizations. John and Pam are also members of Salem Fields Community Church where they volunteer as a musician and children’s ministry leader, respectively.
JK Carpets is a supporter of Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Youth for Tomorrow, March of Dimes, and various other national and local organizations.
